A few months ago I didn’t now Bruce Banner from Bruce Wayne and I couldn’t have named an X-Man to save my life.
Since my son’s Spiderman party, I’ve been studying up. Doing some self inflicted homework.
In the past month I have seen all 3 Spiderman Movies, The Incredible Hulk, The Punisher, and the 3 X Men movies…and tomorrow Scott and I are going on a double date to see the new Wolverine movie.
Before you go thinking I’m working for the mother of the year award, I gotta confess that while part of this did stem from a desire to be able to explain to my son who the bad guys were, the shocking thing is, I have really grown to like this whole super hero genre.
I think it started a few years ago when I started watching Heroes. It opened up a whole new world to me.
It’s called fantasy.
Prior to that, I really wasn’t into sci-fi or fantasy.
- never read Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter
- slept through Star Wars in the theatre
- don’t even get me started on those trekies.
But after becoming a devoted follower of Heroes, I’ve grown to enjoy the uh, less than realistic fiction genres.
This fall I devoured the Twilight novels. Never would have thought vampires to be my thing.
And this spring I moved on to the world of comic books.
Only really I just watch the movies. In crazy multi day movie marathon format… This week it’s been X-men Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs…when I wake up in the middle of the night dreaming of mutants, you will know why.
While I still enjoy a good ol’ Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks romantic comedy, I must confess that I would rather watch Xavier and his crew battle Magneto over a multi disk set of Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility any day of the week. And in fact I am willing to bet I could name more Marvel bad guys for you than I could characters in Jane Austen novels.
Any other Super Hero fans out there?
I never was one for much sci-fi or fantasy either. I did enjoy comic books as a kid and I should try and let my mind go a little more.
ReplyDeleteonly because of Jim do I even care about these movies. in fact, you should know that you're getting major SIL points in his book right now. i, however, still prefer Jane Austin to Stan Lee. but i'll be the dutiful wife, and now dutiful SIL... for you!

ReplyDeletenice to know there are others of us out there! i have an english lit degree and find myself being able to name more x-men than austin characters. shameful, i know--but i would venture--WAY more fun! :-) ahh--the things we do for the love of our "boys" :-)
ReplyDeleteI guess I haven't arrived at this stage yet. I'm just not into super heroes, but I wasn't into half the things I'm into now before I had children so we'll see what happens...only time will tell!

Crystal REALLY!!! Not into fantasy?!?! its the best learning ground for morals and bravery and lets the mind explore a world of all possibilities with out the limitations of gravity or personal lack of talent or skill. It lets a boy become a wise and proud king and a girl the fierce and skilled hunter it... I'm just at a total loss really...
ReplyDeleteI just want to send a shout out and say that I have really enjoyed this new development at our Circus. The indoctrination has been so intense I fear I will have to start tempering it a bit for fear she will OD and relapse into the world of tired romance movies ;-). Not until after tonight's double date of course. How cool is it she has chosen Wolverine as the first movie we have seen in the theaters since...well...I don't remember.

ReplyDeleteI love them. When I was a kid, my sister and I used to watch XMen cartoons after school. That was all, though. I saw the Star Wars movies as a child but didn't care a lot for them.
And then I grew up and I'm with you! I'd WAY rather see an XMen movie than an Austen one. And I haven't seen it yet, SO DON'T TELL ME!!!
Welcome to the world of fantasy - enjoy your stay! Seriously, I love fantasy like X-Men (my husband is always thankful that on my birthday I pick a movie like X-Men to go see), Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings (tell me you've seen those? if not i can't wait for you to discover Aragorn! swoon! double swoon! ). I'm more excited to see Stark Trek than Wolverine, because my love of fantasy goes beyond super heros and into space! I sound like such a dork, but I only like those that have good stories/twists- not typical cheesy sci-fi stuff.
ReplyDeleteYou guys should watch Hellboy. I was skeptical at first but it's so different and unusual and has such an unlikely hero that it's hard not to love, plus it definitely has comic relief.

ReplyDeleteHave you heard? A new book came out: "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." I'm not kidding! It got rave reviews. A bunch of zombies infest the book, and the characters have to kill them. How's that for a combination??! Perhaps it will fit with your new interests well...it's certainly in my queue!
